Historically, the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs has had it all. The most significant upsets: Spain in 2000 returning $113.80 to Win & One Dreamer returning $96.20 in 1994. The most memorable finish, (Yes, even better than Beholder and Songbird) Personal Ensign with an impossible late rally to catch Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors. Point being, be prepared for anything when the BC Distaff is at Churchill.
My view of the overall talent in this year’s BC Distaff is the field is not separated by much. The Morning Line favorite Monomoy Girl represents the best of the 3yr old Filly Division, but her controversial Disqualification loss to Midnight Bisou was more concerning to me, not because of the DQ, but because I haven’t seen vast improvement from Spring to Fall from her. As for the Older Fillies and Mares, no Horse has asserted themselves consistently at a high level. All indications are this year’s BC Distaff has the makings of a wide-open, close finish. Here are my top Three selections in order of preference for the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Distaff, along with a Money Back Special Selection:
- #9 Wow Cat – She came to the United States with a huge reputation earned by going 8 for 8 in her native Chile, and winning some of the most important races in that Country against Males. Her first Two starts in America were disappointing, however her most recent race; a win in the Beldame, showed me she’s finding her form at the right time.
- #11 Monomoy Girl – The outside Post Draw for her is a good thing, she won the Kentucky Oaks earlier this year breaking from post 14 in a field of 14.
- #10 Blue Prize – On the surface she has the best Form coming in; a three race Win streak and never finishing worse than Second in Five career starts at Churchill Downs. Her win in the Juddmonte Spinster last out was bizarre because she tried getting out badly down the stretch, incredibly she still won.
Money Back Special Selection: #3 La Force – Lots of seconds and thirds on her Resume’, and if she finally breaks through with a win it will be at BIG odds. If not, TVG has you covered if she turns in her usual Second or Third.
