American turf racing has been justly criticized over the last decade or so. That being said, since the great Goldikova’s “natural hat trick” between 2008-2010, American runners have won 6 of the last 7 runnings. But, in 2018, it looks like the Europeans definitely hold the edge in talent.
My selection is Happily, who is 15-1 on the morning line, but, in my opinion, will be about half the price come post time. She is a 3-year-old filly that has been running competitively in defeat to the best horses in Europe. In her last 5 starts, she has been defeated by three great horses in Laurens (3 times), Roaring Lion, and Alpha Centauri. She is a multiple Group 1 winner that can be tactical, which is an extremely important trait in a race that appears to lack much pace. In the 34-year history of the race, four 3-year olfillies have won, one of which was the aforementioned Goldikova in 2008.
My 2nd pick is One Master, a 4-year-old filly who has really come into her own over the last couple of months. In her last start, she payed $95 winning the Prix de la Foret on Arc day at Longchamp. She is lightly raced and getting better in each and every start. If she improves off a scintillating Gr1 win last month, she could be very tough to beat.
Catapult will round out my tri. I have always been a fan, and Catapult has catapulted under the guidance of John Sadler. He has gone from good to really good, as he closed to win the G2 Eddie Read and the G2 Del Mar Mile in his last 2 starts. He is a horse who always gives it his all, meaning that, at the very least, he is a must use in any type of exotic wager.
