Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile – TVG Analyst Rich Perloff

  1. FIRENZE FIRE
  2. CITY OF NIGHT
  3. CATALINA CRUISER

The Dirt Mile will be run around one turn this year at Churchill. So…what do you prefer? Sprinter stretching out? Middle-distance horse turning back?

FIRENZE FIRE is 6-for-13 lifetime…and 0-for-4 around two turns. The best race of his career — by a wide margin – was his most recent one-turn mile, when he dominated the field in the Dwyer (G3) at Belmont this past July. Irad Ortiz, Jr., has been aboard for four of his six career wins.

CITY OF LIGHT is an extremely talented colt. He was good enough to win the Oaklawn H. (G2) at 1 1/8 miles, and game enough to run 3rd at 1 1/4 miles in the Gold Cup (G1) at Santa Anita. He’s a multiple Grade 1 winner at 7 furlongs, and, although he’s never attempted a one-turn mile, it might be absolutely ideal for him.

CATALINA CRUISER is unbeaten – and thus far untested – for trainer John Sadler. After his big win in the San Diego H. (G2), Sadler certainly could have pointed him for the BC Classic, but elected to turn him back to prep for this race. And, why not? Sadler already has ACCELERATE in the Classic for this same owner.
