Race 9 (Saturday, April 7, 2018: 5:45 p.m./ET: 2:45 p.m./PT)
Mile and a sixteenth on the main track (three-year-old fillies)
A field of seven looks to win the first Grade I of their careers while stamping themselves as a major contender in next month’s Kentucky Oaks (G1). Let’s take a look at the field:
#1 MONOMOY GIRL is 4-for-5 lifetime, with her one lone career defeat coming in the Golden Rod (G2) last November. Her most recent victory was an easy score in the Rachel Alexandra (G2) at the Fair Grounds. She’s the one to beat.
#2 ESKIMO KISSES is the main threat to upset heavily favored #1 MONOMONY GIRL. This Ken McPeek trainee comes in off a head loss in the Fair Grounds Oaks (G2) and wheels back in just two weeks for this Grade I event.
#3 PATRONA MARGARITA finished a distant fourth at 24/1 in the Rachel Alexandra (G2) behind #1 MONOMOY GIRL. Texas-bred daughter of SPECIAL RATE will need to make up many lengths to defeat the aforementioned rival. Improvement needed.
#4 C. S. INCHARGE was last seen defeating five other rivals in the Sun Coast Stakes at Tampa Bay, which was her first try against winners. Dale Romans trainee makes her graded stakes debut in this spot and will be ridden by Luis Saez, who was aboard when she broke her maiden two starts ago.
#5 ANDINA DEL SUR pulled off a 13/1 upset in the Florida Oaks (G2) on turf at Tampa Bay Downs. Interestingly enough, she makes her career debut on dirt today. She is by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY out of an Irish-bred mare named ANDINA. Breeding indicates she may like the lawn more than she likes dirt. Playing against.
#6 IPANEMA BEACH adds blinkers after finishing second in a maiden special weight race. The winner, VIRGINIA KEY, is entered to run in the Gazelle (G2) at Aqueduct on Saturday. That said, ‘BEACH has yet to win a race and it’s hard to imagine that she’ll defeat a group like this unless she takes a major step forward.
#7 TYFOSHA ran third in an allowance at Oaklawn Park in her most recent afternoon appearance and has lost 4 of 5 starts in which she went off favored. The daughter of FLATTER has burned a lot of money and now takes a step up in class. Siding with others.
