Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) at Turfway Park: Like father, like son? It’s possible as SOMELIKEITHOTBROWN ($3.20) tries to follow in his father’s footsteps (2008 KY Derby winner BIG BROWN) after his victory in this race. And who knew the John Battaglia Memorial would be the key prep for this as the one-two finishers from that race came back to be exacta partners once again in this race? Not me.
Gotham (G3) at Aqueduct: HAIKAL ($10.80) is a neck away from being undefeated in his four-race career, so no doubt trainer Kiaran McLaughlin has as nice colt on his hands. However, he has saddled nine previous starters in the KY Derby (G1), with his best finish being second place with CLOSING ARGUMENT in 2005.
Tampa Bay Derby (G2) at Tampa Bay Downs: Another trainer with another impressive resume (Bill Mott) also has a talented three-year-old prospect on his hands (TACITUS, $19.80) who I proclaimed as ‘interesting and spotted aggressively’ earning him my longshot value play designation for this race. Hope you wagered on him!
Florida Oaks (G3) at Tampa Bay Downs: Totally whiffed on this race when CONCRETE ROSE ($8.40) crossed the wire first, but I’m ok with missing a 3/1 payout on a trainer who hits at a 7% clip with runners returning from layoffs between 61-180 days. Can’t win ‘em all!
