Recap of Selections from 01/12/19

La Canada (G3) at Santa Anita: It only took twelve days of the New Year for racing’s first feel good story to develop, but what a Cinderella story ESCAPE CLAUSE ($4.20) has turned out to be! Purchased by her owner/trainer (Don Schnell) for $3,200 at a Manitoba, Canada sale, she is now a graded stakes winner at Santa Anita with earnings in excess of $420,000!

Marshua’s River (G3) at Gulfstream Park: My one score from the four races analyzed occurred in this race and it was almost enough to ease the sting from the losses for my poor handicapping in the other three as BELLAVAIS and I’M BETTY G ran one-two, keying a $20.70 exacta, which I recommended playing five times.

Tropical Turf (G3) at Gulfstream Park: In retrospect, I leaned too hard on HEART TO HEART in this race, keying him on top in exactas and trifectas. When he finished third, my recommended plays went up in flames, but the first and second place finishers were contenders I specifically noted in the analysis, leaving a $35.20 exacta and $62.90 trifecta (for 50 cents) on the table.

Las Cienegas (G3) at Santa Anita: I’ll acknowledge the $50 loss for this race (even though it was switched from the turf course to the main track due to rain), but one thing we learned is BELVOIR BAY ($4.20), besides being an accomplished turf runner, is also now two-for-two on the main track, providing her trainer (Peter Miller) with plenty of options for 2019.
