RECAP OF SELECTIONS FROM 04/06/19

by Tom Quigley

Santa Anita Handicap (G1) at Santa Anita: Two very talented older handicap horses ridden by a current (and future) Hall of Fame rider threw it down in the home stretch and when the dust settled, GIFT BOX ($6.20) won by a desperate nose over MCKENZIE, enabling me to cash my $50 win ticket on him. Great race!

Santa Anita Derby (G1) at Santa Anita: Most handicappers thought trainer Bob Baffert would win this race for a record nine times, but alas, it was with the ‘other’ Baffert runner that surprised the betting public as jockey Mike Smith unexpectedly took ROADSTER ($8.20) off the early pace and made a rally wide move to run down GAME WINNER, enabling both colts to have enough Kentucky Derby (G1) qualifying points to be in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May.

Wood Memorial (G2) at Aqueduct: Fresh off his victory in the Tampa Bay Derby (G2), the impeccably bred TACITUS ($7.20) added another major Kentucky Derby (G1) prep race to his resume for trainer Bill Mott. Unfortunately, I missed the exacta when TAX finished second despite me commenting that he was a ‘legit contender.’

Blue Grass (G2) at Keeneland: When VEKOMA ($4.80) and WIN WIN WIN finished first and second, I collected the chalky exacta that paid $9.30 twice, once again illustrating that you should spend (at least) just as much time on your wagering strategy as you do your handicapping.
