Previewing the 2019 Busanda Stakes at Aqueduct

Kentucky Oaks points are on the line in the $100,000 Busanda Stakes at Aqueduct on Sunday, February 3rd. It is the third Oaks prep of the weekend and the only one taking place on Sunday. Princess of Sylmar won the race in 2013 en route to a Kentucky Oaks victory.

The 1 1/8-mile race drew a field of 11 sophomore fillies, ranging from stakes placed runners and maiden breakers to even a maiden from the Todd Pletcher barn.

#1 Always Shopping (Pletcher) is royally bred, being by Awesome Again and out of dual grade 1 placed stakes winner Stopshoppingmaria. She was second in her last two starts, including behind #11 Miss Marilyn last out. They ran fast-enough Beyer Speed Figures that day (69 to the winner and 68 to the runner up) that they figure to contend here, even without a mark in the win column for Always Shopping.

#2 Getting Warmer won her first two starts but was fifth after a slow start in the Gin Talking Stakes last out at Laurel Park. #3 Afleet Destiny was second in the grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes last out over the trip, #9 Filly Joel finished third, 2 ¼ lengths behind her. The winner of that race, Positive Spirit, is not here today.

#7 Lady Banba and #4 Floss Dancer exit the same race; they were second and third in an allowance at Laurel on January 6. #5 Discreet Sister has won twice, both over wet tracks.

The race is the eighth on a nine-race card that has three maiden special weight races for three-year-olds. Race 2 is a six-furlong sprint for sophomore boys and features three first-time starters. Race 4 is 6 ½ furlongs for sophomore girls; Brad Cox sends forth #9 Kis Is Frosty who is making her first start for the up and coming trainer after racing for Scott Young. The sixth race is a New York bred maiden event.

Post time is 12:50pm Eastern.
