Prepping for Kentucky with Sunland’s Mine That Bird Derby

The $100,000 Mine That Bird Derby is Sunland Park’s local prep for their Kentucky Derby springboard, the $800,000 Sunland Derby on March 24. That grade 3 race typically draws an array of local horses facing out of town shippers; the locals typically hail from this prep. The Mine That Bird doesn’t carry any Derby points of its own, but the 1 1/16 mile race still drew a field of nine.

#5 Hustle Up (3-1) is trainer Todd Fincher’s starter in here; he finished second last year with subsequent Sunland Derby winner Runaway Ghost. Hustle Up has won two straight stakes races, including one here at a mile February 2. The son of Abstraction is seven for nine lifetime.

#8 Wicked Indeed (9-5) is a full brother to My Miss Lilly and Just Wicked, both of whom are grade 2 winners. Steve Asmussen trains this guy, a Tapit colt, who was fourth behind War of Will in the LeComte (G3) at the Fair Grounds in January. Wicked Indeed has the highest Beyer speed figures in the race, despite only being one for three lifetime.

#7 One Flew South (4-1) is a California shipper for trainer Doug O’Neill, who actually starts the Giant’s Causeway colt for the first time. Wesley Ward trained before, getting this colt to win his debut at Turfway Park in November by 5 ¾ lengths.

#9 Collusionist (10-1) is coming in from Turf Paradise, where he had a bullet work in early January. Two for three last year, Collusionist stretches out for the first time after a poor effort in Arizona last out that saw him ducking in during the race.

#1 is Mc Awesome (6-1) who was fourth in the Riley Allison Derby last over a mile. None of the runners ahead of him are back for this. Mc Awesome has finished in the top three spots in three of his four starts, but has not won since his debut over five furlongs last July.

Post time for the Mine That Bird Derby is 4:18pm local time.
