Handicapping Wednesday’s Early Pick 4 at Gulfstream

Gulfstream Park’s early Pick 4 sequence for Wednesday, February 27, starts in Race 2 with post time at 1:05pm Eastern. It is a 50-cent base bet.

The first leg – Race 2 – drew an 11-horse field of older fillies and mares going five furlongs on the grass. #10 Passionate Emotion (9-2) was second last out ahead of today’s rival #8 Ice Show (4-1). Ice Show will be making her eighth start, whereas Passionate Emotion goes for start #25. #1 A Dixie Twister (5-1) was fourth in that event, a $16,000 claimer which is the same level as today’s race. A Dixie Twister has been on the board in three of seven tries at this distance, and all three of her lifetime wins came on the grass.

The second leg – Race 3 – will be run over seven furlongs on the main track. The race drew a field of six older mares, with #4 Radiantrithym (9-5) headed for start #45. The five-year-old daughter of Algorithms won last out in a starter allowance and has won two of her last four. She’s been in the top three a fantastic 27 times. #1 Body High (5-2) also won last out, and has been claimed in two of her last three starts. She’s been first or second in four of seven tries on this track. #3 My Cantata (7-2) exits the Norm McKnight barn to race for Yvon Belsoeur. This is her first start in Florida since 2017, but she won at Woodbine last out in an off turf route race.

The third leg – Race 4 – is back on the grass sprinting five panels. There are 14 horses entered when counting the two also eligible, #13 R Showgirl and #14 Nina’s Patience. #11 Truly Courageous (9-2) defeated #5 Irish Fix (7-2) last out when they ran second and third, respectively, for a $16,000 tag. Irish Fix has been top three in her last three starts and has first, second, or third in five of six Gulfstream turf tries. Truly Courageous has been second at the distance in three of four attempts.

The final leg – Race 5 – has a field of eight maiden going six furlongs. #7 Guerreron (9-5), a three-year-old by Revolutionary, is hoping for his first win in 11 tries and drops from the $25,000 level back to $16,000. #6 Saint Larned (3-1) has gone up and down in level and tends to show early speed. #4 Golden Prince (4-1) is a son of He’s Had Enough making his debut; he’s had five local works for this. #8 Smooth As (5-1) is making just his second start; the son of Shackleford will have blinkers on for this.

The 10-race card starts at 12:35pm Eastern.
