The late Pick 4 at Oaklawn Park on Thursday, February 7 begins with race 6 and runs through the end of the nine-race card.
Race 6 is a 1 1/16-mile, $6,250 claiming race for older fillies and mares and drew 13 horses including the also eligible #1A, Quality Street. Stablemate #1 Cuddle Kitten (5-2) exits allowance company at Remington Park but has never been on the board in four tries at Oaklawn. #10 Miz Oklahoma Blues has already run here this meet, finishing 10th, but has been in the top three in four of six tries at the distance
Race 7 is a six-furlong maiden race featuring several first-time starters. #1 Munnings Soul (6-1) is one such debuter for Dallas Stewart; the dam earned $355,050. Larry Jones trains the #2 Vercruysse (9-2), another firster who will have Calvin Borel in the irons. #3 Summer Delivery (5-2) has racing experience; the daughter of Twirling Candy was third at Churchill Downs at this distance last out. Steve Asmussen saddles the #7 Lady Apple (9-5), a maiden with graded stakes experience as she ran fifth in a grade 3 at Saratoga last summer and before that was second in a stakes race at Belmont.
Race 8, an allowance event over 1 1/16 miles, features a coupled entry of the #1 Yankton and the #1A Mercer Island, who are 5-2 morning line for trainer Robertino Diodoro. Yankton broke his maiden at Keeneland over the distance in October and changes barns. Mercer Island ships in from California, where the well-bred son of Tapit had a record of 9: 4 – 2 – 1 in 2018. #3 Determinant (9-2) is also a Tapit; he was third at Churchill Downs with an 80 Beyer Speed Figure last out on November 23. #6 Marzo (2-1) rounds out the logical choices; Brad Cox takes over as trainer and this son of Medaglia d’Oro is dropping out of two straight stakes races and certainly should contend with these.
Race 9 – six furlongs for older mares – wraps things up with a deep 12 horse field in an allowance optional claiming event. Only three of the horses are in for the $12,500 tag: #2 Fastanista (8-1), #8 Miss Barham (10-1), and #12 Chilean Queen (15-1). #1 Ordained Kiss (15-1) on the rail broke her maiden over this trip a year ago, then was off from February until November and has had two starts back at Remington Park. #3 Euro Me (5-1) has been running against better, but took 11 tries to break her maiden before finally getting it done in October.
#6 Dutch Treat (5-2) is a likely choice, having broken her maiden and run second in a stakes race over this track last spring. She hasn’t raced since April, but had a five-furlong work on February 2 in 1:01.2 to prepare. She will have blinkers on today. #9 Spunky Town (6-1) is actually exiting the same stakes race as Dutch Treat and has not raced since March; she was fifth on that occasion.
Post time on the day is 1:30pm Hot Springs local time.
